It's that time of year, I think. Our second quarter has ended, and Emery brought home his second report card today. He's excelling in his class. He knows all of the First 100 Sight Words, and 64 from the second grade list. He's doing Accelerated Reader tests and has passed the past several with 100%. We also got the rubric back from his oral report. He got 20 points out of 20. His teacher had really nice things to say about his hard work. We've slacked with spelling practice at home, so his spelling tests haven't been too great. I forget that he needs to practice spelling because he's a smarty about most things. The English langauge is HARD to spell. Another thing they are doing in his class is identifying coins. He knows all the coins and can tell what each is worth. I help once a week with Math and we usually play a math game where the kids have to count the coins (dimes or nickels) to get the correct amount of change. It's pretty impressive.
He's also in love with The Magic Treehouse books. I didn't realize that they get more difficult the farther into the series you get. He read "Dinosaurs before Dark" (which is book #1) and then his dad took him to the library. He picked out "Crazy Day with Cobras" (which is book #45). He's enjoying it as he reads while I get the girls to bed at night.
This might be my favorite exersise that his teacher does. She reads a paragraph and the kids have to listen and write what they hear. The paragraph reads, "The farmer saw the black and white toy boat out on the water. It floated under the shiny steel bridge to a small beach."
Emery wrote, "The frmr so the blak and wiet toey bot owt on the wotr. It flotid udr the shine stil brij to a sml besh." He used capital letters and periods.
This is an example of Emery's numbers. I love that he got the two backwards and the twelve is correct. On the back of this page his teacher had him write two other numbers, 31 (written correctly) and 10043 (for 143).
Because he's doing so well, we had Wendy's for dinner. Emery was thrilled with his caramel apple parfait. We're so glad Emery loves school.
